The question I get most after skincare: "what do you film with?" People expect a camera-store answer. The real answer is a phone and about $100 of gear, most of which lives in the corner of my living room. Here's the list, in the order I'd actually buy it.
1. Clip-on mic — buy this first
If you only get one thing, make it this. Viewers will forgive soft lighting; they will not forgive audio that sounds like you're filming in a parking garage. A little wireless clip-on mic changed my retention more than any lighting upgrade, and setup is genuinely plug-and-go.
2. Creator ring light
The classic, for a reason. Mine has three warmth settings and I keep it on the warmest one — cold white light makes every room look like a dentist's office. It folds down flat, so it also comes along for kitchen and bathroom shots.
3. Flexible phone tripod
The wrap-around legs matter more than you'd think. Half my angles are the tripod bent around a shelf, a cabinet door, or the towel bar. A rigid tripod only gives you one shot; this gives you the whole apartment.
4. Warm LED lamp
This one's for the background, not your face. A soft glow behind you adds depth so the frame doesn't look flat, and it's the difference between "filmed in a cozy room" and "filmed against a wall."
5. Desk organizer
Not glamorous, but the ring-light-and-cables corner of my desk was becoming its own character in my videos. A $15 organizer keeps the chaos off camera and cut my setup time in half, because everything is where I left it.
The two I wish I'd bought first
- The mic. I spent two months on lighting before fixing my audio. Wrong order — audio first, always.
- The flexible tripod. I propped my phone against a stack of books for longer than I want to admit. It fell mid-take. Twice.
